5 Hurricane
Preparation Myths:
Know the Facts
1
Taping your windows is potentially very dangerous and offers no protection. Taped or not, a window can still break and detach from the frame, which could result in large pieces of sharp glass flying through the air. A better solution is impact-resistant windows, storm shutters, or plywood.
TAPING YOUR WINDOWS IS A GOOD WAY TO KEEP THEM IN PLACE.
2
Even slightly opening a window can have the exact opposite effect — if you let air in, it can put more pressure on your roof and walls, causing terrible damage. It also makes it easier for flying debris to make its way into your home.
OPENING A WINDOW DURING A STORM CAN RELIEVE PRESSURE INSIDE THE HOME.
3
The extreme winds that hurricanes bring come from every direction. This means that none of your windows are safe during a storm. Debris, from rocks and tree limbs to street signs and patio furniture, can blow around and hit any part of your home.
YOU NEED TO BOARD ONLY WINDOWS AND DOORS FACING THE WATER.
4
Waiting out a storm is difficult. You might be in the dark, and you’ll probably be anxious to survey the damage to your home. However, the longer you can wait, the better. Fallen trees and power lines as well as flooding can pose huge safety risks.
ONCE THE STORM IS OVER, YOU CAN GO BACK OUTSIDE.
5
It’s a surreal sight to see your windows and doors bending with the pressure of wind. It’s tempting to want to keep them in place, but your body weight will be no match for hurricane-force winds, and the door or window might not hold, so it’s a good idea to steer clear.
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PUSH BACK ON A BOWING DOOR OR WINDOW.
